Secret Life of Squirrels Part 2: Mother Squirrel & Babies Photography
I call this series the Secret Life of Squirrels because even though we all see them on a daily basis, we don't really always know what they are up to. We see them but we don't really see them, if you know what I mean.
Squirrels are busy and intriguing little creatures. Always in a hurry. But through this documentary series, I'm showing that squirrels are actually very loving, fierce, and funny little animals. They are compassionate sentient beings as all animals are.
In Part 1, the mama squirrel moved her babies to a new nest behind my apartment building. I thought that was where the story would end, but no. The story happily continues...Part 2: Mother has a change of heart and returns babies back to original nest + 2 babies come down from the nest and explore!
Yesterday around lunch time, Matt called me and said that the mama squirrel was moving the babies back to the nest. What?! I was so surprised to hear that because just 6 days ago I caught her moving her babies out of that nest. I wondered why she was back so suddenly.
When I got home around 5:00 in the afternoon, I hugged Matt and glanced out the patio window and immediately saw the mama squirrel resting in the tree. I quickly grabbed my 80-200mm zoom lens and started shooting.
Then I look over to another branch and I saw another squirrel just sitting there. It was her baby! Wow! I ran in and said "The babies are out of the nest! The babies are out of the nest!" Matt couldn't believe it either.
And then another one came down at that moment too so I'm now looking at two babies nestled together. The mother closely kept an eye on them a few feet away.
Wow, I was so freaking excited. It was so adorable. I watched them for about 1 hour, getting lots of cute photos.
One of the takeaways from watching this was that they both had two distinct personalities. The first squirrel was super shy and afraid to move even an inch. The other baby squirrel was spunky and brave, jumping around grabbing leaves and enjoying the taste of a tree branch. Hah! It was the most adorable thing ever.
I'm going to keep my eye on these squirrels over the next few weeks, so I'll keep you updated if anything else happens. I hope you have enjoyed this photo story series.
